THE BEST TOOL IN THE WORLD
Training is a term we have been conditioned to accept as something we do through tasks and by using tools. This is true, but sometimes the tools we use, we cannot see, taste, smell, or physically touch. - Brandon Carpenter, horse trainer.
Often when I'm doing a public appearance or leading one of my seminars, I'm approached by people who want to know what I think is the absolute the number one best, most consistently reliable tool for training and rehabilitating a dog. They are often surprised when I tell them that the best tool they could ever have for controlling their dog is something they already own. They carry that tool with them every day, every where they go. Their tool is their energy. In fact that is the only tool I will come out and advocate every time.
The energy that you give off must be a calm assertive energy. The only energy that your dog will respect and obey. If you are screaming or get frustrated easy while you are training your dog, your dog will sense that you are unbalanced. When they sense this, they will not listen to you. In the wild dogs do not follow unbalanced pack leaders. This is no different with people. Assertive means that you are firm with them, and you let them know that you are in charge at all times.
